Becoming Fieldsmart
Our professional development program focuses on developing Fieldsmart skills to deepen our engineers’ understanding of field realities and design opportunities.  For both new and experienced engineers, it fosters the skills and attitudes that we rely upon for our success.  The program has two elements:

  • Project Experience

More than anything, experience shapes an engineer.  We have found that the most important professional development opportunity for engineers is be continuously involved in projects from design through construction.  All of our engineers spend a considerable amount of time in the field to help develop their ability to design from the ground up, instead of from the design manual down.

  • Continuous Education

Because so much of our work involves reconstruction in developed areas, our engineers’ technical knowledge must include the basics of water, wastewater, transportation and stormwater engineering. To help them gain this broad expertise, we devote considerable firm resources to technical training and education.  In addition, all of our staff are closely involved in Project Public Works, which is a public outreach program that highlights how decisions regarding municipal infrastructure impact the built landscape.  We believe that the more our engineers understand how their projects impact place and people, the better they will perform as both civil engineers and civil servants.
